Feb 23, 2023

Early onset dementia ranks second! Signs of Frontotemporal Lobe Dementia

The risk of dementia increases with age and usually occurs in elderly people between the ages of 70 and 80, and if dementia is diagnosed before the age of 65, it is called "early-onset dementia. Although frontotemporal dementia does not account for a large proportion of total dementia, frontotemporal dementia is the second most common type of early-onset dementia, usually occurring between the ages of 50 and 70.

When it comes to dementia, most people think of the symptoms of memory loss, but doctors pointed out that frontotemporal lobe dementia is less likely to have memory loss in the early stages, the symptoms are mostly behavioral abnormalities, language disorders, often confused with mental illness, so the diagnosis is more difficult.

The health information of the Chinese Medical University Hospital states that there are four common types of frontotemporal lobe dementia.

Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia: Early symptoms include emotional abnormalities, personality changes, or executive function deficits. If family members observe that the patient's personality suddenly becomes cold and impulsive, loses interest in things they used to be passionate about, or if there is a significant decrease in workability or a sudden change in eating habits, they should be aware of these abnormalities.

Semantic aphasic frontotemporal dementia: Patients with this type of disorder retain their ability to express themselves fluently in the early stages, but suddenly lose the ability to understand specific words or suddenly cannot say certain terms, for example, they forget the word "dog" and need to replace it with "four-legged animal".

Non-fluent aphasic frontotemporal dementia: Expression becomes fluent, hesitant, and decreases, often accompanied by grammatical errors and an inability to express complete sentences clearly and fluently. These patients are able to recognize simple words normally, but have difficulty understanding complex sentences.

Frontotemporal lobe dementia combined with motor neuron disease: About 10% of patients have a combination of motor neuron disease, such as progressive

All warning signs of dementia

Common dementia can be divided into "degenerative dementia" and "vascular dementia", among which the symptoms of degenerative dementia are different depending on the area of brain degeneration. According to information from the Taiwan Dementia Association and Chang Gung Hospital, the different types of dementia are described as follows.

Degenerative dementia

Alzheimer's disease: It is the most common form of dementia and is usually caused by damage to the nerves in the brain, such as the hippocampus and cerebral cortex, which are responsible for memory, sensation and emotion.

Frontotemporal lobe dementia: The frontal and temporal lobes of the brain are damaged, and symptoms such as personality changes and inappropriate behavior may occur in the early stages of dementia.

Dementia with Lewy bodies: The cause is protein deposition in brain tissue, accounting for 15-30% of all dementias and occurring mostly in old age. In addition to cognitive dysfunction, symptoms include repetitive and unexplained falls, vivid visual and auditory hallucinations, delusions, etc. The patient may be overly sensitive to antipsychotic drugs and therefore requires special attention in medication.

Vascular dementia.

It is dementia caused by vascular disease in the brain, such as severe stroke and progressive degeneration of small blood vessels in the brain. Symptoms include sudden deterioration of cognitive function, dramatic changes in mood and personality, urinary incontinence, and the tendency to fall down.

In addition, the neurologist mentioned that the initial symptoms of various types of dementia are usually not obvious, it is easy to neglect and delay medical treatment, therefore, in the list of ten common warning signs, it is recommended that if you observe a family member with one of the symptoms, you should go to the neurology or psychiatric consultation as soon as possible.
