How Do I Check If My Kidneys Are OK
Mar 15, 2023
Kidney failure is when one or both of your kidneys are not working properly. Renal failure is sometimes temporary and develops acutely. Other times, it is a chronic (long-term) condition that slowly worsens. Renal failure is the most severe stage of kidney disease. It is fatal without treatment. If you have kidney failure, you may survive for days or weeks if left untreated.
Some kidney failure patients choose not to have dialysis or a transplant but continue to be cared for by a medical team, take medication, and monitor their diet and lifestyle choices.

Healthy kidneys balance salts and minerals, such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium, and potassium, which circulate in the blood. When you have kidney failure, your diet can help you maintain a healthy balance of salt and minerals in your body.
Acute kidney injury can occur in a variety of ways, including vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels), organ failure, surgery, or reduced blood flow from urethral obstruction. Acute allergic reactions to certain drugs can also lead to kidney failure. Regardless of the cause, acute kidney injury can be life-threatening and requires immediate management.

Kidney disease risk factors:
There are many environmental and social factors that increase your risk of developing kidney disease. These SDOHs can lead to severe chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus (also known as glycodiabetes or glycopathy), lupus, or being overweight, which can lead to kidney disease. In addition, your genes or family members with kidney disease may also play a role.
Other reasons include not having health insurance, not having a regular doctor who knows you and your medical history, and local health care and policy issues that do not provide a clear path for the patient. For example, if you're pregnant and don't get good prenatal care, you may end up with eclampsia (a type of high blood pressure that develops during pregnancy and can cause seizures - which can be life-threatening for both the baby and the mother), among other conditions, and can lead to long-term kidney damage.

What are the symptoms of renal failure?
Kidney failure means that your kidneys are no longer able to do these jobs well, and other health problems can develop as a result. As your kidney function declines, you may experience the following:
1. You usually have swelling in your legs and feet, or itching at the end of your ankles.
2. Feel tired during the day and sleep poorly at night.
3. Loss of taste, stomach discomfort, and a strong sense of fullness.
Following your treatment plan can help you avoid or resolve most of these symptoms. Your treatment plan may include regular dialysis treatment or kidney transplant, special diet plans, physical activity, and medications.
