The long-standing constraints of water scarcity and fragile ecosystems have severely hindered economic development in desert regions. To improve the ecological environment, local authorities have promoted the planting of Haloxylon trees (a sand-fixing species), while simultaneously cultivating Cistanche deserticola to boost the income of local residents. This dual approach not only ensures efficient utilization of limited water resources but also enhances economic benefits.
Cistanche, often referred to as the "Ginseng of the Desert," possesses high nutritional and medicinal value. It thrives in arid regions with large diurnal temperature variations and is highly cold-resistant, parasitizing primarily on the roots of Haloxylon trees. In recent years, as desertification control projects have advanced, the area of artificially planted Haloxylon has expanded significantly, creating favorable conditions for large-scale parasitic cultivation of Cistanche.
Through extensive ecological plantation efforts, desert regions have gradually built a robust foundation for the Cistanche industry. Significant experience has been accumulated in seed propagation, inoculation techniques, yield enhancement, and post-harvest processing, providing strong technical support for industrial development. To further promote the industrialization of Cistanche in desert areas, it is necessary to analyze the current challenges and formulate strategies that support high-quality and sustainable industry development.
1. Current Challenges in the Development of the Cistanche Industry in Desert Regions
1.1 Harsh Natural Conditions Affect Product Quality
Although desert environments are suitable for Cistanche growth, salinization, water shortages, and extreme weather conditions threaten its development. Declining surface water levels and falling groundwater tables make artificial irrigation difficult to sustain. In many areas, Haloxylon trees have low survival rates or uneven growth, impeding the scale and quality of Cistanche production. Additionally, rodent infestations-which damage Haloxylon roots-pose a further threat to host plant populations, leading to reduced yield and quality of Cistanche.

1.2 Low Standardization Hinders Industrialization
In the past, wild Cistanche was predominant. However, due to overgrazing and deforestation in the 1950s–60s, the natural habitat was severely degraded. Today, large-scale artificial cultivation is underway, but the industry still suffers from short cultivation history, fragmented land use rights, and lack of uniform standards. Without clear guidelines, some farmers chase short-term profits, recklessly expanding cultivation and overusing fertilizers and pesticides, leading to quality deterioration.
The industry is dominated by smallholder farmers, resulting in fragmented production, inconsistent planting and processing methods, and disorganized sales. Moreover, modern agricultural technologies are underutilized in these regions.
1.3 A Single Industry Chain Limits Value-Added Potential
Although the government has initiated pilot programs recognizing Cistanche as both a food and medicinal product (under the "Medicine-Food Homology" policy), limited funding, outdated processing technologies, and weak R&D capabilities restrict value creation. Compared to other functional botanicals, the functional development of Cistanche remains in its infancy, and its product offerings lack distinctiveness.
Despite high quality and growing market share, the industry lacks data on active ingredients, standardized indicators, and scientific branding strategies. There is also a lack of trademark registration and geographical indication applications, leading to counterfeit products and low market recognition.

2. Strategies for Promoting Sustainable Development of the Cistanche Industry
2.1 Implement Systematic Planning for Industrial Development
Cistanche cultivation can leverage the unique resource advantages of desert ecosystems, making it a strategic industry for regional revitalization. Governments should adopt mid-to-long-term development plans from a strategic perspective:
Scientific Development: Establish dedicated task forces at different administrative levels to monitor industry trends, identify problems, and coordinate with research institutions to adopt advanced technologies.
Rational Spatial Planning: Promote "one township, one specialty" models to avoid internal competition. Encourage the cultivation of Cistanche in marginal lands unsuitable for food crops, maximizing ecological and economic returns.
Cross-Sectoral Collaboration: Water authorities should ensure rational allocation of irrigation resources, while forestry departments should provide guidance on planting and pest control techniques. Universities and research institutions can accelerate technology transfer and provide intellectual support.

2.2 Strengthen Standardization in Cultivation and Processing
Standardization is the foundation of modern agriculture and is critical for improving field management, land utilization, and pest control. Authorities should jointly issue technical standards for Cistanche production and processing in desert regions, including field protocols and mechanized operations.
Efforts should also focus on:
Building industrial clusters by integrating smallholder farmers into cooperatives or alliances with leading enterprises;
Constructing processing facilities, drying rooms, and industrial parks to create a unified processing system;
Establishing wholesale markets for Cistanche and other medicinal herbs, connecting production, packaging, storage, and logistics into an integrated platform.
These measures will support standardized production and transparent marketing, allowing producers to respond to market demand and pricing trends more effectively.

2.3 Enhance the Core Value and Diversification of the Industry Chain
The rise of the Cistanche industry will naturally drive the development of related sectors. To increase its added value, stakeholders must explore new product formats:
Functional food development: Based on the herb's tonic properties, new health products can be developed. For instance, Cistanche-lamb stews can leverage local dietary habits to create regionally branded delicacies.
By-product utilization: Residues from processing (e.g. scales or fragments) can be repurposed into animal feed, dietary fiber, or fermented products like herbal wines using biotechnology.
In the era of digital consumption, Cistanche can be integrated with secondary and tertiary industries, such as eco-agriculture, wellness tourism, and desert retreats, expanding its influence beyond agriculture.
Local governments should also invite expert teams to conduct studies on the pharmacology and efficacy of Cistanche to strengthen scientific branding. Promoting official certifications - such as "Three Products and One Standard" (green food, organic products, geographical indication, and quality standards) - can enhance consumer trust and market acceptance.
