How is Cistanche used for Menopausal Syndrome?

Abstract:

Purpose: To explore the curative effect of regulating meridian, tonifying the kidney, and clearing the pulse method in the treatment of menopausal syndrome.

Method: Self-prepared soup (sheng di, Cornus, purple river cart, epimedium, cistanche, ligustrum lucidum, jujube seed, dragon tooth, etc.) to treat the 166 cases.

Result: The total effective rate was 96%. Conclusion: Self-made Gengnian Decoction can increase E2 level and treat menopausal syndrome effectively and safely.

During menopause, ovarian function gradually declines, and the estrogen level decreases. It leads to dysfunction and disorder of the autonomic nervous and cardiovascular systems and degenerative diseases of tissues and organs. From February 2000 to June 2004, the author used self-made decoction to treat 166 cases of menopausal syndrome and achieved good results. The report is as follows.

Clinical information

The 166 patients in this group were all outpatients, aged 46-56 years old, with an average of 50 years old, and the course of the disease was 7 months to 3 years. Western medicine diagnostic criteria are drawn up by the "Guiding Principles for Clinical Research of New Chinese Medicines" for female menopausal syndrome [1]. (1) Women between 45 and 55 years old. (2) In addition to menstrual disorders, the symptoms are typical symptoms of hot sweating, accompanied by irritability and irritability, palpitations, insomnia, abnormal emotions, memory loss, blood pressure fluctuations, Sore waist, and legs, etc. (3) Endocrine hormone testing: serum estrogen (E2) levels decrease, and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels increase.

The diagnostic criteria of traditional Chinese medicine are drawn up according to the "Guiding Principles for Clinical Research of New Chinese Medicines". That is hot flushing, hot flashes, and sweating, hot hands, feet and heart, sore waist and knees, dizziness, tinnitus, upset, restlessness, insomnia and dreaminess, red tongue with little moss, thin pulse.

Treatment method

Self-made decoction composition: 30g of raw Rehmannia, 25g of purple river cart, Angelica, Epimedium, Cistanche, Ligustrum lucidum, Dipsacus, Floating wheat each 20g, Dragon's teeth, Eclipta prostrate, Sour date kernel, Yejiao 15g each of vines, 10g each of Chinese wolfberry, Chinese yam, dogwood, Moutan bark, Poria, Alisma, Gardenia, Bupleurum, and Cyperus rotundus. Put the medicine in a crockpot and soak in clear water for 60 minutes. Decoction twice a day, half dose each time, two times in the morning and evening, one month is a course of treatment, continuous taking for three months observation Curative effect.


Efficacy criteria

Significant effect: After three months of treatment, the symptoms were disappeared.

Effective: After three months of treatment, the primary symptoms disappeared, and the secondary symptoms improved significantly.

Invalid: After three months of treatment, both the primary and secondary symptoms improved.

There were 65 cases markedly effective, 95 cases were effective, and 6 cases were ineffective. The total effective rate was 96%.


Typical cases

Zhang, female, 48 years old. First visit on May 16, 2000. Menstrual cycle disorder in the past year, sometimes once 3-4 months, sometimes twice a month, dizziness, hot flushes, sweating, insomnia, upset and irritability, depression, low libido. It is the deficiency of the kidney after the examination.

Prescription: Rehmannia glutinosa 30g, Purple River cart 25g, Angelica, Epimedium, Cistanche, Ligustrum lucidum, Dipsacus, Floating wheat each 20g, Dragon tooth, Eclipta prostrate, Sour date seed, Yejiao vine each 15g, Chinese wolfberry, 10g each of Chinese yam, dogwood, tree peony, Poria, Alisma, Gardenia, Bupleurum, and Cyperus rotundus. Symptoms alleviated after six doses, and symptoms disappeared after another 12 doses. There was no recurrence during the one-year follow-up.

Discussion

Menopausal syndrome belongs to the category of symptoms before and after the cessation of menstruation in Chinese medicine. Chinese medicine believes that the kidney stores the essence to control reproduction. Self-made decoctions have the functions of nourishing blood and regulating menstruation, soothing the liver and relieving depression, replenishing qi, stopping sweat. The prescription uses Cistanche to tonifying the kidney and yang, nourish the kidney, and enhance the ability of free radical metabolism, thereby delaying the aging of middle-aged and elderly. It has a good effect on improving and controlling menopausal syndrome.
