Cistanche deserticola (Cistanch deserticola Y.C. Ma.) is a dry, scaly, fleshy stem of the perennial plant Cistanche deser-ticola Y.C. Ma. It is sweet, salty, warm. It has the efficiency of tonifying the kidneys, warming the waist and knees, strengthening muscles and bones, tonifying the kidneys, and nourishing the intestines.
Physicians of the past dynasties regarded it as a well anti-aging product. In recent years, there have been many reports on the anti-aging effect of Cistanche.
Keywords: Cistanche, kidney, anti-aging, active ingredients.
1. Active ingredient research
The research on the active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine can not only explain which components of traditional Chinese medicine produce effects. But also provide a basis for exploring the principles of traditional Chinese medicine for preventing and curing diseases. The research on the active ingredients of Cistanche has provided a fundamental of its anti-aging effects.
Yang Ming [1] found that the active ingredients of Cistanche are ergosteroside, echinacoside, cistanche glycoside A, betaine, and mannitol.
Professor Tu Pengfei [2] found that the phenylethanoid glycosides in Cistanche can tonifying the kidney.
Xue Dejun [3] isolated and identified two anti-aging active ingredients in Cistanche: D-mannitol and Cistanche Polysaccharide (CDPS), and found that they are delaying skin aging, enhancing immune function, activating superoxide dismutase, and reducing body have significant effects on lipid accumulation.
Gu Li Nur. Mutley [4]'s research showed that ECH extracted from Cistanche has a repairing effect on oxygen-free radical damage caused by aging caused by D-galactose.

2.1 Impact on ultrastructure:
The aging process of tissue and organ morphology is in the duration of the aging process. In recent years, more and more scholars study the anti-aging effects of drugs by observing the changes in tissue and organ morphology. Sun Yun [5-7] found that Cistanche has a significant effect on hepatocyte nucleus mitochondrial volume reduction in aging model mice, the thickening of the basement membrane of the anterior cerebral cortex, and the protrusion of glial cells. Wang Dejun et al. [8] found that CDPS can delay the degeneration of mitochondria, lamellar bodies, and other structures of lung cells in aging mice through observation of mouse brain neurons, and inhibit lung tissue cell apoptosis. The above studies show that Cistanche can delay the aging and degeneration of the liver, brain, lung, spleen, and other organs, and delay the body's aging.
2.2 Impact on aging-related enzymes:
aging-related enzymes are mainly related to maintaining normal metabolism and removing enzymes related to aging products. The former mainly include monoamine oxidase (MAO); the latter includes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase. Catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH-PX), etc. The anti-aging effects are known by testing the activity of aging-related enzymes. Xu Hui [13] found Cistanche water extract can increase liver active oxidation unit in aging model rats. Cistanche polysaccharide (100mg/kg) increases the activity of SOD in the liver of aging mice [14]. The total glycosides of cistanche (GCs) can increase the SOD activity in the heart, liver, brain, and kidney tissues of aged mice. Cistanche Glycosides (GCs) can significantly increase the SOD activity of heart, liver, brain, and kidney tissues in aged mice. The above experiments prove that Cistanche can change the activity and quantity of aging-related enzymes, maintain normal metabolism, and delay aging.
2.3 Impact on aging metabolites:
The anti-aging effect can be obtained by measuring the activity and content of aging metabolites (lipid peroxide, lipofuscin, malondialdehyde, etc.). Aging metabolites causes changes in cell metabolism and functional morphology, causing cell senescence and death. Therefore, the determination of aging metabolites is one of the important indicators for evaluating anti-aging drugs. Cistanche lowers the lipid peroxide (LPO) content in the brain and liver of aging mice caused of O 3 [17]. The total glycosides of cistanche can reduce the LPO content in the serum, brain, and liver of subacutely aging mice.

Cistanche improves sexual dysfunction
2.4 The effect of Cistanche on immune function:
When the human body ages, the immune ability is reduced. Improving immune function is a good way to delay aging.
Zheng Yifan [18] found that Cistanche has the effect of activating lymphocyte proliferation. Shi Dawn [19] found that Cistanche extract can enhance immunity. Zeng Liqun [20‚21] found that CDPS can promote the proliferation of mouse thymic lymphocytes in vitro experiments.
2.5 Anti-stress experiment:
The anti-stress experiment is a survival ability experiment under inferior stimulation, including weight-bearing swimming, hypoxia tolerance, and so on. Wang Zhiqiang [23] The study showed that: 7 days after administering Cistanche Decoction to mice, their hypoxia-tolerant survival time and load-bearing swimming time were significantly longer than those of the control group (P<0.05).
Therefore, cistanche can improve the survival ability of the body under inferior stimulation, prolong life, and have a good effect on delaying aging.3
Clinical research
Clinical studies have shown that Cistanche can improve the aging symptoms of middle-aged and elderly and has an anti-aging effect. It can significantly improve the body's aging symptoms, restore the energy, physical strength, and vitality of the middle-aged and elderly, and delay aging.

Conclusion
In summary, the anti-aging effect of Cistanche is affirmative. It is one of the well-known tonic Chinese medicines. The anti-aging principles are obtained by anti-aging pharmacodynamics and active ingredients research. Cistanche is more and more popular in the world.
