There are four species and one variety of the genus Cistanche in China, including Cistanche deserticola, Cistanche deserticola, Cistanche salina, Cistanche alba, and Cistanche deserticola, distributed in Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, and Gansu.

Guanhua Cistanche and Desert Cistanche are the legal original plants of traditional Chinese medicine Cistanche, and Salted Cistanche is also used as Cistanche in Ningxia, Xinjiang, and other places.

At present, large-scale cultivation of Cistanche deserticola has been developed in Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, and Gansu, and large-scale cultivation of Guanhua Cistanche deserticola has been developed in the southern region of Xinjiang, effectively alleviating the resource problem of Cistanche deserticola and protecting wild resources.

The purity and content of total glycosides in the main active ingredient of Cistanche deserticola are about 5-10 times that of Cistanche deserticola. The 2005 edition of the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China added the inclusion of Cistanche deserticola.

Guanhua Cistanche is naturally distributed in the Taklamakan Desert and its surrounding areas in southern Xinjiang, China. It grows in desert areas where the genus Salix is distributed and parasitizes on the roots of Salix. Red willow has great ecological and medicinal value. It is not only an important afforestation tree species for windbreak, sand fixation, and improving saline-alkali land but is also known as the "Guanyin willow" and "Bodhisattva tree" by the local people. Its tender branches and green leaves are good medicines for treating stubborn diseases such as urticaria and joint pain.

Desert Cistanche is naturally distributed in western Inner Mongolia (Alxa League, Bayannur City), Gansu (Minqin, Jinchang, Changma, Jiuquan, Jinta), and northern Xinjiang. It parasitizes the roots of Haloxylon ammodendron, which has ecological value in windbreak and sand fixation.

Salted Cistanche deserticola is distributed in Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Ningxia, Gansu, Xinjiang, and other provinces. This species has a wide range of hosts, including salt claws, slender salt claws, protruding salt claws, red sand, pearl firewood, and Suaeda salsa.

The White Flower Salt Cistanche is a variant of the Salted Cistanche, which parasitizes the roots of the Pearl Wood.

Cistanche deserticola is distributed in Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, and Gansu, with the main host being red sand.

Cistanche deserticola is only suitable for growing at latitudes south of the Taklamakan Desert and is a green legend at 37 ° N.

Desert Cistanche is naturally distributed in western Inner Mongolia, Gansu, and northern Xinjiang, and is found in desert areas with the distribution of Haloxylon ammodendron. The main desert is the Alxa Desert, with an altitude of 225-1250 meters.

Salted Cistanche deserticola is distributed in Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Ningxia, Gansu, Xinjiang, and other provinces, and is found in desert grassland zones, lake basin lowlands in desert areas, and areas with heavy salinity and alkalinity, with an altitude of 700-2650 meters.

White Flower Salt Cistanche is a variant of Salted Cistanche, distributed in Ningxia (Yanchi) and Xinjiang (Chaiwopu), and found near salt lakes in desert areas.

Guanhua Cistanche is supplied with sufficient underground glacier meltwater and atmospheric precipitation from the Kunlun Mountains. Cistanche is nourished by the snow water of the Kunlun Mountains, with the highest nutrient content and the most widespread application.

Desert Cistanche deserticola, artificially cultivated second only to Tubular Cistanche deserticola, is sourced from saline drip irrigation technology.

The artificial cultivation of Salted Cistanche has not been developed due to its low yield.

Sha Cistanche had never been harvested or seen in the market before the 1990s, and its planting techniques have not been promoted yet.

The phenylethanolamine glycosides in tubular deserticola are significantly higher than those in cyclone terpenoid glycosides, with phenylethanolamine glycosides mainly consisting of two major components: echinoid and glycosides from pistil flowers.
