Many people think that the desert is dry and barren, and it is difficult to grow plants in the vast Gobi. In fact, there is also vitality in the desert. In a hidden corner, there is a herb full of mystery—Cistanche deserticola.

Cistanche deserticola has been a precious medicinal material since ancient times, and has a long history of medicinal use. It was also listed in the "Nine Chinese Immortal Herbs" by the Taoist classic "Tao Zang". It is known as "desert ginseng" and "treasures in medicine".

What is Cistanche?

Cistanche, also known as Jiangyun, Cunyun, Cistanche, Chagangaoya (Mongolian), is an endangered species.

"Chinese Pharmacopoeia" records that this product is the dry fleshy stem with scales of Cistanche deserticola Y.C.Ma or Cistanche tubulosa (Schenk) Wight. Excavate when the seedlings have just emerged in spring or before the frozen ground in autumn, and remove the stem tips. Cut into sections and dry in the sun.

It is important to emphasize here that there is a difference between Cistanchetubulosa and Cistanche deserticola.

1. Different hosts

Cistanche is mainly produced in Alashan, Inner Mongolia. Because of its many "families" of Cistanche, the desert plants that it parasitizes are also different. Among them, the medicinal Cistanche takes Haloxylon as its host and parasitizes on the roots, so it is also called thorax.

Cistanche tubulosa is mainly produced in Xinjiang, and it was included in the "Chinese Pharmacopoeia" in 2005. Because it mainly parasitizes the roots of red willows, it is also called Liu Yun.

Cistanche deserticola is also called soft daikon in the market. It has a soft texture and is mostly cylindrical.

Cistanche tuberosum is also called hard dayun, which is hard and spindle-like in shape.

3. Different sections

The section of Cistanche deserticola is more meaty, and its vascular bundles are corrugated rings. High-quality cistanche has good light transmission and strong gelatinous texture, which is what we often call oily.

The cross-section of Cistanche tubulosa is grainy, and the vascular bundles are dotted and shapeless. The light transmission of Cistanche deserticola is not as good as that of Cistanche deserticola, nor does it have obvious gelatinous texture.
