Therapeutic Effect Of Electrolyzed Hydrogen-rich Water On Chronic Constipation
Nov 08, 2023
Chronic constipation is a common symptom-based condition that affects patients' quality of life. Electrolyzed hydrogen-rich alkaline reduced water (EHARW) helps treat gastrointestinal disorders due to its various bioactive properties. This single-arm open-label study was designed to investigate electrolyzed hydrogen-rich water (pH 9.5; H2≈0.5 mg/L) in patients with chronic constipation.

Thirty patients with chronic constipation were enrolled as intention-to-treat (ITT) after screening. During the intervention period, two patients dropped out and 28 patients completed the study per protocol (PP).
Selected patients were instructed to drink electrolyzed hydrogen-rich water (pH 9.5; H2=0.5 mg/L) (20 mL/kg body weight/day) produced by a home medical device for four weeks. Compared with the baseline after the 4-week intervention, the primary outcome was the frequency of complete spontaneous bowel movements (CSBM), Bristol stool pattern, Patient Assessment of Constipation Symptoms (PAC-SYM) score, and Patient Assessment of Constipation-Quality of Life (PAC- QOL) score as a secondary outcome.

The results showed that no adverse events were observed during the study period during electrolyzed hydrogen-rich water treatment. Completely spontaneous bowel movements/week (29.8 %, p < 0.05) and Bristol stool form score (24.6 %, p < 0.01) significantly increased compared to baseline.
Finally, overall and subscale scores of the PAC-SYM (58.0%) and PAC-QOL (54.2%) questionnaires decreased significantly (p < 0.001). These results suggest that daily intake of electrolyzed hydrogen-rich water (pH 9.5; H2 ≈ 0.5 mg/L) can improve CSBM frequency as a primary outcome in patients with chronic constipation. Likewise, electrolyzed hydrogen-rich water improved Bristol stool form scores, symptoms, and quality of life as secondary outcomes in patients with chronic constipation through a home intervention.
This study comes from the team of Professor Li Kyu-jae of the Department of Integrative Medicine, Wonju College of Medicine at Yonsei University. 28 patients with chronic constipation drank about 1,500 ml of electrolyzed alkaline hydrogen-rich water every day. After 4 weeks, it was found that the frequency of bowel movements of these patients increased by 29.8%. The shape of the stool and the patients' self-evaluation of constipation were significantly improved, and the patients' quality of life was also significantly improved. improve. In short, after patients with chronic constipation drank hydrogen water for 4 weeks, both objective indicators, such as the frequency and shape of stools, and self-perception, such as evaluation of constipation and quality of life, were significantly improved.
This is the situation after 4 weeks of drinking. What will happen if you continue to drink? Based on our daily observations, it is most likely to continue to have an effect. This effect may be better if you drink more. This is a statistical difference. There must be some people whose results are not satisfactory. We have also encountered patients whose results are not satisfactory, and even a few people cannot improve for several months. There are also cases where some people get good results at first, but then continue to use it and the results are not so good.

Of course, this study used electrolyzed water, although the author also emphasized that the hydrogen concentration was 0.5 ppm. But for the current era when hydrogen water has become increasingly mature, this concentration is relatively low. It also needs to be studied whether there will be a stronger effect if 2ppm hydrogen water is used. Electrolyzed water is alkaline water. Whether this alkalinity is the cause of the effect has not been studied comparatively. In summary, repeated studies using neutral physically mixed hydrogen water are needed. I have long suggested that clinical scholars should focus on studying the effect of hydrogen water on constipation, but until now, there have been no reports of clinical trials. I can't understand why.
The effect of hydrogen water on constipation is theoretically very special because studies have long found that hydrogen can promote intestinal peristalsis, and methane can inhibit intestinal peristalsis. I have also observed a few people drinking a glass of hydrogen water and going to the toilet within half an hour. According to his living habits, this time is not the time he should go, and he usually doesn't go that fast.
Natural Herbal Medicine For Relieving Constipation-Cistanche
Cistanche is a genus of parasitic plants that belongs to the family Orobanchaceae. These plants are known for their medicinal properties and have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries. Cistanche species are predominantly found in arid and desert regions of China, Mongolia, and other parts of Central Asia. Cistanche plants are characterized by their fleshy, yellowish stems and are highly valued for their potential health benefits. In TCM, Cistanche is believed to have tonic properties and is commonly used to nourish the kidney, enhance vitality, and support sexual function. It is also used to address issues related to aging, fatigue, and overall well-being. While Cistanche has a long history of use in traditional medicine, scientific research on its efficacy and safety is ongoing and limited. However, it is known to contain various bioactive compounds such as phenylethanoid glycosides, iridoids, lignans, and polysaccharides, which may contribute to its medicinal effects.

Wecistanche's cistanche powder, cistanche tablets, cistanche capsules, and other products are developed using desert cistanche as raw materials, all of which have a good effect on relieving constipation. The specific mechanism is as follows: Cistanche is believed to have potential benefits for relieving constipation based on its traditional use and certain compounds it contains. While scientific research specifically on Cistanche's effect on constipation is limited, it is thought to have multiple mechanisms that may contribute to its potential to relieve constipation. Laxative Effect: Cistanche has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a remedy for constipation. It is believed to have a mild laxative effect, which can help promote bowel movements and induce constipation. This effect may be attributed to various compounds found in Cistanche, such as phenylethanoid glycosides and polysaccharides. Moistening the Intestines: Based on traditional use, Cistanche is considered to have moisturizing properties, specifically targeting the Intestines. Promoting hydration and lubrication of the Intestines may help soften tools and facilitate easier passage, thereby relieving constipation. Anti-inflammatory Effect: Constipation can sometimes be associated with inflammation in the digestive tract. Cistanche contains certain compounds, including phenylethanoid glycosides and lignans, that are believed to have anti-inflammatory properties. By reducing inflammation in the intestines, it may help improve bowel movement regularity and relieve constipation.
