When Intimacy Fails in Marriage, It's Not Always About Love — Sometimes It's About Kidney Deficiency

Many couples haven't stopped loving; they've just lost their rhythm

The most awkward kind of coldness in a marriage isn't loud fighting or infidelity. It's this: during the day, you still coordinate picking up the kids, cooking, and replying to messages. But at night, lying in the same bed, you feel like two roommates. You want to get close; he pulls away. She wants tenderness; you have no energy. Once or twice, you can explain it away as "tired." After a year or two, doubts creep in: "Don't you love me anymore?" "Have you lost interest in me?" "Is there someone else?"

But the truth is often another, harder-to-say sentence: you don't want to; your body just can't keep up.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) teaches that the kidneys govern reproduction, essence (jing), and what's called "strength and capability." After thirty - and especially after thirty-five - years of staying up late, working overtime, social drinking, raising children, anxiety, prolonged sitting, and irregular sexual habits, kidney essence and energy are gradually depleted. When the body's foundation is hollowed out, the first thing to fail is often the "state" between husband and wife: for men, slower erections, poor firmness, going soft easily, premature ejaculation, exhaustion afterward, sore waist and weak legs; for women, low libido, dryness, numbness, cold intolerance, irregular periods, treating intimacy like a chore. The more you fail, the more you avoid; the more you avoid, the more you grow cold. Eventually, a physical problem turns into an emotional one.

So some marital crises shouldn't start with a couples therapist. They should start with a different question: is your heart cold, or are your kidneys depleted, your qi and blood empty, and your body simply worn out?

"Kidney deficiency" in TCM is not a punchline

Many people hear "kidney deficiency" and think of embarrassing men's health ads. But in TCM, the "kidney" is not just the anatomical organ. It's more like a life-energy system: the kidneys store essence, governing growth, development, and reproduction; they govern water metabolism, controlling urination, edema, and fluid balance; they govern bones and produce marrow, affecting the lower back, legs, brain function, and energy; they govern containment, determining whether things "leak" - premature ejaculation, nocturnal emissions, frequent nighttime urination, excessive vaginal discharge, chronic fatigue; they house the "Life Gate Fire," determining cold tolerance, sexual desire, and vital drive.

Kidney deficiency doesn't mean your kidneys are "broken." It means this system is depleted, weakened, and struggling to function. It generally falls into several patterns: Kidney Yang Deficiency, where the body feels like it has no battery and no heating - manifesting as sore/weak lower back and knees, cold hands and feet, cold intolerance, low energy, frequent night urination, low libido, weak erections, cold uterus in women, and delayed menstruation; Kidney Yin Deficiency, where deficient fire flares up and causes irritability - manifesting as dry mouth, hot palms/soles/chest, night sweats, insomnia, a red tongue with little coating, sometimes excessive desire but erections that don't hold; Kidney Qi Deficiency, where things can't be contained - manifesting as fatigue, shortness of breath, frequent urination, premature ejaculation, thin clear discharge; and Kidney Essence Insufficiency, where the foundation is thin and aging accelerates - manifesting as poor memory, premature graying, tinnitus, sore back, declining libido, and poor sperm quality.

All these words - back pain, fatigue, cold intolerance, night urination, premature ejaculation, low desire, dryness, emotional numbness - when placed in a marriage, are easily translated as: "You don't care about me," "You've changed," "You don't love me anymore." But the body says something else: I just haven't been nourished for too long; my essence, qi, and blood have hit bottom.

The most dangerous mistake in marriage is misreading "physical depletion" as "dead feelings"

I've seen too many couples trapped in a vicious cycle: the husband has one bad night, gets anxious, performs worse next time, then starts avoiding his wife. The wife feels rejected, overthinks, gives cold shoulders, tests him, brings up old grievances. The husband feels more shame, communicates less, escapes through work, phones, and video games. Eventually both are exhausted: "Forget it. Old married couple. Just make do."

But "making do" is the most expensive option. It turns a fixable physical issue into a trust issue. It turns recoverable kidney energy into heart-coldness. TCM emphasizes that body and mind share the same illness. Marriage works the same way: physical depletion drags down intimacy; repeated intimate failure damages the liver, kidneys, and sleep in return. Liver stagnation plus kidney deficiency plus heart exhaustion - once tangled together, a person feels hollowed out: pushing through the day, empty at night, numb in bed, aggrieved in the heart.

So don't rush to label your partner. First distinguish: is he or she "unwilling," or "afraid to fail again"? Is it "no feelings," or "no energy"? Is it "fallen out of love," or "the Life Gate Fire is nearly extinguished"?

When it comes to kidney nourishment, one herb is impossible to ignore: Cistanche

Growing in the desert, Cistanche was called "Cong Rong" - "leisurely" or "composed" - by the ancients. The name is perfect, because nourishing the kidneys requires the opposite of urgency, aggression, or trying to force results overnight. Cistanche's defining characteristic is exactly this: it warms without being harsh, tonifies without being violent, moistens without causing leakage.

The Compendium of Materia Medica describes it as: "A medicine that nourishes the Life Gate, enriches kidney qi, and supplements essence and blood… warm but not hot, tonifying but not harsh, warming but not drying, moistening but not causing diarrhea - hence the name 'Composed.'" Its core effects are threefold: it tonifies kidney yang, benefits essence and blood, and moistens the intestines to promote bowel movements.

It's suitable for those with kidney yang deficiency and essence-blood depletion: people who are cold-intolerant, have sore lower backs, frequent night urination, low libido, weak erections, general deficiency, poor complexion, dry hair, low energy, slow recovery, and accompanying dry constipation. For these people, Cistanche is appropriate.

Cistanche is not a "quick-acting Viagra" - it's "slow fire restoring yang"

Many people misunderstand Cistanche, thinking that after soaking it in water for two days, they'll be virile by night. Wrong. Cistanche is not a stimulant, not an aphrodisiac, not a one-time fuel. It adds firewood, stores water, and lubricates the pipes: when firewood is insufficient and the Life Gate Fire can't rise, it warms kidney yang; when blood is insufficient and the "zongjin" (reproductive tissues) can't engorge, it benefits essence and blood; when the intestines are dry and fluids depleted, causing lower-body dryness, it moistens the intestines.

So it's more suited for middle-aged people, the deficient, those worn out by overwork, those drained by late nights, and those wanting to slowly recover after excessive sexual activity. It's not suitable for yin deficiency with fire flare, damp-heat pouring downward, excess-heat constipation, or diarrhea/loose stools. In one sentence: Cistanche rescues "deficient-cold type kidney deficiency," not all types of "not performing."

Many people today have intimacy issues rooted in high blood pressure, diabetes, high lipids, low testosterone, thyroid problems, depression/anxiety, sleep apnea, prostatitis, or poor pelvic blood flow. These can't be solved by Cistanche alone. Check the body first, then discuss supplementation.

In marriage, don't turn Cistanche into "secretive self-medication"

The worst scenario: the husband feels ashamed, secretly buys "kidney tonics" behind his wife's back; she doesn't know, only sees him irritable, sweating at night, breaking out, getting more agitated with each supplement. The distance between them grows.

If Cistanche enters a marriage, it should be something both understand together: "I've been a bit kidney-yang deficient lately. Don't fight. Let me adjust for a while." "You're not incapable; you're just too tired. Let's stay up less and have some Cistanche lamb porridge." That's the right approach.

For daily food therapy, use Cistanche Lamb Porridge: 10–15g Cistanche, 150g lamb, appropriate amount of japonica rice, ginger, scallion, and salt. Decoct Cistanche first to extract the juice, slice the lamb and cook together, then add rice to make porridge. Suitable for cold lower back/knees, cold intolerance, low energy, and frequent night urination.

Cistanche is a "sovereign herb," not a lone hero. For kidney yang deficiency, it can be paired with Eucommia, Morinda, and Cuscuta; for essence-blood depletion, with Goji berry, Angelica, and Rehmannia; for qi deficiency, with Astragalus and Codonopsis; for liver stagnation, with Bupleurum, rose, and finger citron. Pattern differentiation is the soul of Chinese herbal medicine. Standard decoction dosage is 6–10g. Single-herb steeping in water has weak effects - don't dump 50g at once, or you'll upset your stomach and get diarrhea.

More important than Cistanche: "kidney maintenance" within the marriage

No matter how good the medicine, it can't compensate for simultaneous depletion: sleeping at 1 a.m. and waking at 6, relying on coffee to survive and alcohol to save face, sitting for ten hours so the pelvic floor rusts, bottling up stress so liver qi stagnates, treating sex like an exam - afraid of not getting hard, afraid of finishing fast, afraid of being judged - then after it's over, no cuddling, no talking, no confirming "I still love you," just rolling over to sleep. A marriage like this can't be saved by ginseng.

TCM treatment for "kidney-deficiency-type marital issues" never relies on just one herb. Nourish essence: sleeping before 11 p.m. is worth more than Cistanche. Moderate sexual activity - no forcing, no excess, no avoidance. Nourish the liver: speak up. "Have you been under a lot of pressure lately?" "We haven't cuddled in so long - not for that, just because I want to be close." One sentence unblocks liver qi better than ten prescriptions. Nourish the spleen: cut ice, spice, oil, and alcohol; eat to seventy percent full. Nourish the vessels: Baduanjin, brisk walking, squats, Kegels, swimming, stretching. Nourish the heart: rescue "intimacy" from "performance." First comes safety; then comes physical response.

When to see a doctor instead of just drinking Cistanche tea

No matter how good Cistanche is, it's not a master key. If you experience persistent erectile issues for months with morning erections, sudden drastic libido drop, worsening premature ejaculation with painful urination or perineal discomfort, menstrual disorders with painful intercourse and obvious dryness, night urination disrupting sleep with swelling and back pain, fatigue with weight loss, anemia, thyroid/glucose/blood pressure abnormalities, or low mood, anxiety, insomnia, and collapsed self-worth - don't just blame "kidney deficiency." Go to a proper clinic.

Men should see andrology/urology/endocrinology; women should see gynecology/endocrinology/TCM gynecology; couples together may need TCM internal medicine plus psychological counseling plus couples communication. TCM emphasizes pattern differentiation; Western medicine emphasizes etiology. The real problem might be low testosterone, diabetic vascular disease, hypothyroidism, anemia, depression, chronic prostatitis, menopause, or pelvic floor dysfunction. These cannot be fixed by Cistanche alone.

A marriage must warm the body before it can warm the heart

We always assume a marriage turns cold because passion faded, values clashed, the daily grind wore things down, a third party appeared, or personalities didn't match. But some marriages cool down like this: he was too tired and didn't say; she was too wronged and didn't understand; the body weakened first, intimacy stopped first; communication stopped, and the heart followed.

TCM has a gentle saying: "The kidneys are the root of (congenital constitution); the spleen and stomach are the root of (acquired constitution); the heart is the sovereign organ." Marriage is similar: the kidneys are your drive to draw close; the liver is your courage to express emotion; the heart is whether you're still willing to stay; the spleen and stomach are your ability to eat well, sleep well, and live well together.

What Cistanche can do is very limited: it only helps you slow down, warm up, and recover a little - but only along the path of "kidney yang deficiency and essence-blood depletion." It can't apologize for you, can't put down your phone for you, can't say "I still love you" for you, and certainly can't save a marriage with zero communication just by steeping in water.

But if you're willing to treat it as a reminder - "Hey, maybe we're both too tired. We should nourish our bodies and our relationship together" - then this herb has been used correctly.

Not all coldness is infidelity. Not all powerlessness is lack of love. Some marriages first drain the body, then chill the palm. Before tonifying the kidneys, don't rush to blame your partner. Before taking medicine, say those words out loud: "Have you been too tired lately?" Cistanche is composure in the desert; marriage is too. Don't rush, don't yell, don't hide. Restore the body, reconnect the conversation, and slowly bring back the sense of safety after the lights go out.
