After 3 Years Of Stewing At Home, We Finally Realized: When The Pairing Is Right, It’s A “Yang-Tonifying Power Soup.”
Aug 27, 2026
My husband drank it for a month and even said on his own: This soup is really good.
Deer antler and seahorse are indeed strong.
But if you pair them wrong,
you may end up with heat signs like nosebleeds and mouth sores, or
you may not absorb the tonic effect at all-wasting money.
My husband drank versions of it for three years, and we finally tested out this ace combination:
warming but not drying, savory and fresh without being fishy-after drinking it, his body felt like it was recharged.
What changed at 40
When my husband turned 40, he clearly felt his stamina drop:
climbing just three floors left him breathless for a long time,
soreness and weakness in the lower back and legs,
at night he felt less capable in that area,
and he would easily break out in cold, weak sweats.
He secretly bought deer antler powder and seahorse-infused liquor.
But after taking them he got mouth blisters, couldn't sleep at night, and felt so overheated he nearly lost hope.
Later, after I read a lot of classical texts and consulted my uncle (from a family lineage of Chinese medicine), I finally understood:
Deer antler and seahorse are both strongly warming, strongly tonifying substances. Used alone, they can easily pull too hard on the kidney root.
They must be combined with more warm-but-gentle herbs such as Cistanche (Rou Cong Rong), Morinda root (Ba Ji Tian), and Eucommia bark (Du Zhong),
and then balanced with foods like pigeon and lean pork to support Yin fluids-so you get Yin–Yang balance, tonifying without excessive dryness.

Why your deer antler + seahorse soup has no effect-yet makes you overheat
Chinese medicine has a saying: Lone Yang cannot generate.
Deer antler and seahorse are considered very Yang. If you don't pair them with ingredients that nourish blood and fluids and that gently support kidney qi, it's like pouring gasoline onto dry firewood-
the flames flare up, but once it burns out, there's nothing left.
The truly skillful way to tonify is to seek Yin within Yang-supporting the body's fluids and blood while warming the functional drive.

In this formula, Cistanche (Rou Cong Rong) is called desert ginseng: warming but not drying;
Ba Ji Tian and Du Zhong strengthen tendons and bones;
sliced bull penis is said to provide androgen hormone precursors;
and pigeon and lean pork help nourish Yin and harmonize.
Multiple ingredients work together-more like a slow simmered soup, not a high-heat deep-fry.
The Four-Tier Structure of the Formula
Tier 1: The pure-Yang double heroes (Deer Antler + Seahorse)
Deer antler: tonifies kidney Yang and benefits essence and blood, but the dosage must be small.
2–3 g of red-powder deer antler per batch is enough.
Seahorse: warms the kidney and strengthens Yang; said to disperse lumps and reduce swelling.
One pair is just right.
Tier 2: The warm-and-gentle three gentlemen (Cistanche + Ba Ji Tian + Du Zhong)
Cistanche (Rou Cong Rong): tonifies Yang without being drying, moistens the intestines and supports bowel movement-especially for people who feel not up to it and also have constipation.
Ba Ji Tian + Du Zhong: a golden pair for strengthening the lower back and kidneys; after drinking it, the waist and legs feel stronger.
My husband used to feel sore just bending forward to wash his hair. After one month of this soup, he can now carry two cases of beer up to the fifth floor in one go.
Tier 3: The power multiplier (Sliced bull penis)

Bull penis: said to contain natural androgen-related precursors, but it smells strongly gamey/fishy, so it needs ginger slices to help remove the odor.
5–8 g per batch is enough-don't overdo it.
Tier 4: The Yin-nourishing harmonizers (Pigeon + Lean Pork + Red Dates + Goji)
Pigeon: tonifies the kidney and benefits qi; nourishes Yin and blood, balancing the drying nature of deer antler and seahorse.
Lean pork: improves flavor and makes the soup less fishy and less greasy.
Red dates + goji berries: nourish blood and calm the spirit; the whole soup tastes gently sweet and smooth.

Full Method (Savory, Delicious, Not Fishy)
Ingredients
dried seahorse: one pair (one male, one female)
red-powder deer antler: 2–3 g
Cistanche 10–15 g, Ba Ji Tian 10 g, Du Zhong 10 g
sliced bull penis: 5–8 g
1 pigeon, 50 g lean pork
red dates 5, goji berries 5 g, ginger 3 slices
optional: one capful of white liquor (to enhance flavor and help the herbs work)

Steps
Soak Ba Ji Tian, Du Zhong, and Cistanche in clean water for 20–30 minutes.
Soak the sliced bull penis with ginger until soft (to reduce odor).
Blanch the pigeon and lean pork; rinse clean.
Put everything except the goji berries into the stew pot; add water to cover the ingredients by 2–3 cm.
Double-boil (water-bath stew) for 1.5–2 hours. Season with salt and add goji berries before serving.
Taste
Savory, rich, and mellow-no strange fishy smell. My husband even said: Make it again tomorrow.
Who it's for
Middle-aged men: overworked and depleted; sore lower back and legs; not up to it; easily sweating weakly.
Couples trying to conceive: said to improve sperm quality and increase chances of pregnancy.
Women with qi and blood deficiency: pale complexion, irregular periods (you can remove bull penis and add longan).
Note: People with high blood pressure, those in an acute infection phase, teenagers, and pregnant women should avoid it.

Summary: Tonifying Yang isn't about taking a fierce single tonic-it's about a well-designed combination
Stop worshipping single-ingredient deer antler + seahorse liquor.
I simmered versions of this for three years. What took my husband from three-minute enthusiasm to actively asking to schedule it was precise pairing and appropriate dosage.
Deer antler + seahorse is the fire.
Cistanche + Ba Ji Tian is the fuel.
Bull penis is the bellows.
Pigeon + lean pork is the water.
Only when the fire is strong and the water is sufficient can the warmth last long and penetrate deep.
