The survival method of Cistanche

Most of Cistanche's life is spent under the sand. The seeds of Cistanche are very small, less than 1mm in diameter. After landing, they will move down between the gaps of the sand. If you are lucky, you may encounter the roots of the host plant. Generally, only two or three of the two or three hundred seeds of Cistanche can survive. Pieces. The surviving Cistanche seeds have to wait a long time underground to emerge from the ground. It usually takes two to three years, and some take five to eight years. The successfully parasitized Cistanche seeds will germinate under the induction of secretions, and then absorb nutrients through the fine roots of the Haloxylon tree, just like the fetus is connected to the mother through the umbilical cord. The nascent plants are wrapped in scaly degraded leaves, which look a bit like pine cones. A dozen of them can grow on a parasite, but in the end, only a few can develop normally and break through the surface.

The conditions for the growth of Cistanche are very special. In the desert, it must depend on the Haloxylon tree to grow, relying on the extremely developed root system of the Haloxylon tree to absorb water deep underground. Haloxylon is a shrub of Chenopodiaceae, usually 2 to 5 meters high, with thin yellow-green branches and joints; the tender branches are juicy, have high osmotic pressure, and are resistant to dehydration. It is the tree with the widest distribution and the highest economic value in the desert. The wood of Haloxylon is hard, fire-resistant, and does not leave ashes after burning. It is known as the "live coal" of the desert. Its twigs are the first-class fodder eaten by camels. In addition, the Haloxylon tree grows rapidly, has dense branches, a developed root system, strong adaptability, wind-proof and sand-fixing, low planting cost, and a high survival rate. When the Haloxylon grows into a forest, they have the power to resist the wind and sand. So when Haloxylon and Cistanche are together, it is possible to save a desert.

Cistanche nourishes kidney-yang, nourishes essence and blood, moisturizes the intestines, and relaxes bowel movements. In traditional Chinese medicine, Cistanche is often used to invigorate the kidneys, improve sexual function, relieve fatigue, enhance physical strength, and enhance immunity. Therefore, people in the desert now know the saying, "Plant Haloxylon for 3 years, then plant Cistanche for 3 years, and it will become gold in 6 years".

When the local people harvested Cistanche, they carefully cut open the sand nest with their hands, and the blue-blue Cistanche showed their heads. On the sand dunes not far away, the Haloxylon spp. planted last year has rushed out of the sand and danced gently with the breeze.
