Main features

This species belongs to the family Liliaceae and is a perennial succulent plant that parasitizes the roots of Haloxylon ammodendron. The stem is fleshy and sometimes branched from the base, with a height of 40-160cm and a thicker lower part, measuring 5-12cm in length. Leaves are scaly and pale yellow. The lower leaves are denser, ovate, 5-15mm long and 5-8mm wide. Spike-shaped inflorescence, 15-50cm long. Flower yellow, corolla lobes yellow-white, light purple, or edge light purple. The capsule is oval, with two lobes. The seeds are mostly small, with a mesh-like surface and a glossy appearance. The flowering period is 4-6 months, and the fruiting period is 6-7 months.

The Ming Dynasty's "Compendium of Materia Medica" explains the origin of the name "Cistanche deserticola": "This substance is nourishing but not severe, hence it is called Cistanche deserticola. It is gentle and moist, nourishing but not dry, smooth but not diarrhea, and often not severe." Therefore, "Cistanche deserticola" should be due to its sweet and warm nature, salty and moist nature, with the characteristics of nourishing yang but not dryness, warming and promoting kidney yang, and tonifying kidney deficiency.
