Hetian, The Authentic Origin Of Cistanche Deserticola
Aug 07, 2024
China is a globally recognized major producer of Cistanche deserticola, with the Guanhua Cistanche deserticola from Hotan as an outstanding representative. It has a recorded history of over two thousand years of consumption and medicinal use. Due to the unique biological code constraints and strict requirements for ecological environment and natural climate conditions, only the Hotan region in Xinjiang, China, as well as adjacent latitude regions in Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh, are most suitable for the natural growth of Cistanche deserticola, with the highest content of active ingredients and the most prominent medicinal value.

The desert Cistanche deserticola in Alxa, Inner Mongolia, also grows in the desert and has strong drought resistance, but its nutritional value and functional components are not as high as those of Cistanche tubulosa. Cistanche tubulosa grows on the southern edge of the Taklamakan Desert and parasitizes on the roots of red willows. Its growth environment is harsh and it is easier for the human body to absorb compared to desert Cistanche deserticola. At present, only two technological breakthroughs in the artificial cultivation of Cistanche deserticola have been achieved in China. Among them, Cistanche deserticola, which is naturally distributed in the southern edge of the Taklamakan Desert centered on Hotan, has an effective functional ingredient content that is 5 to 10 times higher than that of desert Cistanche deserticola, whether grown naturally or artificially.
Cistanche deserticola, which tonifies kidney yang and benefits essence and blood, is the most frequently used nourishing traditional Chinese medicine in China throughout history. It was first recorded in the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and is classified as a top-grade herb. It has been recorded in all generations of herbal medicines.

Cistanche deserticola is rich in phenylethanoid glycosides. Modern pharmacological research shows that it has therapeutic and healthcare effects in many aspects, such as enhancing immune function, improving learning and memory ability, resisting Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, protecting the liver and protecting the liver, anti-fatigue, anti-aging, moistening intestines and relieving constipation, and is known as "desert ginseng". The growth and reproduction of Cistanche deserticola have very strict requirements for climate and environment. Its unique medicinal and health benefits have attracted people's attention, and long-term predatory mining has led to its near extinction. Compared to other fairy grasses, Cistanche deserticola is rare and difficult to develop commercially on a large scale due to its natural growth and survival. After long-term evolution in nature, Cistanche deserticola has developed its unique biological characteristics, and the success rate of parasitism in its natural state is extremely low. Developing large-scale cultivation of Cistanche deserticola is the only way to address the rapidly growing demand.
As early as 1976, personnel from the medical and herbal medicine department of Hotan used the method of sowing seeds through trenches to successfully inoculate Cistanche deserticola (Dayun) artificially. However, due to the large amount of seeds used and the scarcity and high cost of wild seed resources, this technology cannot be widely promoted. In the early 1990s, Tu Pengfei went to Hotan to systematically study the artificial planting technology of Cistanche deserticola. In 1999, the Hetian region established a research group for the industrialization of Cistanche deserticola and collaborated with Professor Tu to carry out scientific research on artificial breeding. In August 2002, the artificial cultivation of Cistanche deserticola was declared successful. Since then, the artificial planting area in the Hotan area has been expanding year by year, reaching over 500000 acres by the end of 2015. From this, farmers have increased their income, environmental desertification has been suppressed, and the industrial development of Cistanche deserticola has also obtained a basic supply of raw materials.

The breakthrough and promotion of artificial cultivation technology of Cistanche deserticola in its original habitat of Hotan is undoubtedly an important contribution made by Hotan to the cause of human health. However, the slow progress of large-scale industrial development has seriously constrained the deep development and utilization of Hetian's characteristic resources.
Hetian Guanhua Cistanche, also known as Hongliu Dayun, entered the Chinese Pharmacopoeia in 2005. Due to its unique growth habits and high medicinal value, Cistanche deserticola has been praised as the "desert ginseng" by medical practitioners throughout history. There are four main species of Cistanche plants in China, among which Cistanche tubulosa has the highest content of active ingredients. In Hotan, 250700 acres of red willows are artificially planted, and 167500 acres of big clouds are planted. Currently, the annual output of red willows and big clouds in the entire region is about 4000 tons. As of now, the artificial red willow Dayun in Yutian County has reached 81000 acres, with a vaccination area of 70000 acres. Among them, 30000 acres of artificial red willow Dayun have completed the certification of organic product production base and AA-level green food base.

After more than 20 years of unremitting efforts, the research team of Hetian Emperor Chen and Professor Tu Pengfei has adhered to the close combination of industry, academia, research, and application. Based in Hetian, they have devoted themselves to research, from the traditional efficacy, material basis, mechanism of action, inoculation biology, cultivation and planting technology of Cistanche deserticola, to artificial breeding, large-scale planting promotion, effective ingredient extraction, health clinical application, industrial development and other aspects. They have implemented a huge systematic project, broken through multiple technical difficulties in the artificial planting of parasitic plants internationally, researched and solved a series of economic and technical problems and processing core technologies in large-scale breeding, artificial cultivation, high-yield and stable planting of Cistanche deserticola, and established a corresponding independent intellectual property system.
Di Chen has worked hard and carefully laid out the industrial development of Cistanche deserticola, from the breeding of high-quality seeds, and guidance on planting techniques to the purchase of fresh products. He has jointly implemented a complete supporting system and standards with local governments, vigorously developed order planting, and coordinated the planning and layout of the development and control of large-scale natural resources of Cistanche deserticola while promoting the prevention and control of desertification in red willow planting.

Professor Cistanche Research on the Growth of Cistanche deserticola
Ecological agriculture is mainly based on breeding and cultivation; The green industry, mainly focused on fresh product processing and purification of functional ingredients, and the characteristic business, mainly focused on the marketing of plant extracts and a series of health foods, are the three organic components of the carbon sink ecosystem of the characteristic industry chain of Cistanche deserticola that Emperor Chen is striving to build.
Under the guidance of Professor Tu, Emperor Chen successfully developed a series of health products that are purely natural, nondependent, fully regulated, and have significant effects by scientifically combining ginseng extract and astragalus extract with the functional component extract of Cistanche deserticola. This has opened up a new era of scientific utilization and efficient absorption of the magical functional value of Cistanche deserticola, a precious supplement in China.
