Protecting residual renal function is the primary task in the treatment of chronic kidney disease. Even for patients undergoing dialysis treatment in stage 5 of chronic kidney disease [1], it can significantly improve the survival rate of dialysis patients, reduce excessive diet and fluid restrictions, and improve the molecular weight. From October 2007 to March 2010, we used our own comparative study on 90 cases of hemodialysis, comparing conventional dialysis with oral cistanche and simple conventional dialysis. The results are as follows.

Chronic renal failure belongs to the categories of traditional Chinese medicine, such as swelling, edema, and hysteria. The treatment mostly follows the principle of "opening the ghost door, cleaning the house, and going to the scorpion" recorded in the "Internal Classic". Although the representative drug rhubarb has the effect of preventing diarrhea and turbidity and protecting the residual kidney, long-term use can easily cause constipation and damage the health [7], and it is not suitable for long-term drinking due to the limitation of decoction and taste. Cistanche not only moisturizes the intestines, but also replenishes the essence and blood, and is more suitable for dialysis patients. Cistanche is sweet and salty, warm in nature, moist and juicy, enters the kidney and large intestine meridian, it can not only invigorate the kidney yang, but also invigorate the essence and blood, and moisturize dryness. Its power is gentle, tonic, but not severe, tonic, without the disadvantages of nourishing greasiness, and can be taken for a long time [8]. Clinical observations showed that the residual urine volume of dialysis patients in the Cistanche treatment group was significantly increased, constipation was improved, ultrafiltration volume, dry body mass, and mean arterial pressure were significantly reduced compared with the previous period, and the metabolic indicators of urea nitrogen, phosphorus, and low-density lipoprotein were reduced. The nutritional index albumin and hemoglobin levels were significantly increased, indicating that Cistanche can protect the residual kidney function, improve the patient's nutritional status, reduce the inflammatory state, and improve the adequacy of dialysis. The mechanism should be closely related to the effects of Cistanche for nourishing essence and blood and warming Yang to facilitate water. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that the water extract of Cistanche deserticola can cause ileum contraction in mice, enhance intestinal motility, and shorten the defecation time; enhance the cell and humoral immunity of mice, promote metabolism and enhance physical strength, resist oxidation and aging, and promote endocrine effects.
