BlueRock Therapeutics, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bayer, recently announced that it has collaborated with University Health Network (UHN) to evaluate the first open-label Phase 1 study (Ph1) of DA01 in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). patients were treated with medication.
DA01, a pluripotent stem cell-derived dopaminergic neuron, is a first-of-its-kind cell therapy with the potential to regenerate lost function and potentially improve and reverse Parkinson's disease. Currently, DA01 is being clinically evaluated in a subset of patients with advanced Parkinson's disease who are no longer fully effective with conventional drug therapy. DA01 is surgically implanted into the patient's brain, where it integrates into the brain and restores lost physiological function. This treatment, if successful, could lead to major advances in Parkinson's disease.

The primary objective of the Phase 1 trial is to evaluate the safety and tolerability of DA01 cell transplantation one year after transplantation. Secondary goals were to assess evidence of transplanted cell survival and motility effects at 1 and 2 years post-transplant, to assess continued safety and tolerability during the 2-year period, and to assess the feasibility of transplantation.
