Cistanche is one of the precious Chinese herbal medicines with a wide range of uses. It was an enhancement and tonifying herbal medicine since ancient times. It has a history of more than 1,000 years and has the reputation of desert ginseng.
The unique medicinal value and clinical curative effect of Cistanche have always been the research focus of many medical workers. Especially many achievements in pharmacology. It has an active therapeutic and health care effect on many aspects of the human body. Cistanche has the effect of tonifying kidney and nourishing essence and is used to treat impotence and infertility. Cistanche deserticola was decomposed a new compound and 13 known compounds in this study. The details are as follows.
Extracting the dry cistanche (10 kg) with methanol, the extract was suspended in water and then extracted with ether, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol. The ethyl acetate extract was subjected to medium pressure column chromatography with Wakosil 40C18, and acetonitrile-water-acetic acid (10:89:1→60:39:1) was eluted to obtain nine fractions of E-1to E-9. E-2 (0.2g) was subjected to medium pressure column chromatography, gel filtration, and preparative HPLC to obtain compound 3 (106 mg). Compounds 5 (38 mg),6 (55 mg), and 7 (600 mg) were from E-3 with E-3,Compounds 1 (80 mg), 2 (232 mg), and 9 (150 mg) were from E-4 to E-6.
The n-butanol extract (495.0 g) was in water, subjecting to DiaionHP-20 column chromatography, eluted with 10%, 20%, 40%, 60%, and 100% methanol to obtain B-1 to B-5 in sequence. B-1 (28.1g) was subjected to Cosmosil 75C 18 -OPN column chromatography, medium pressure column chromatography, and gel filtration to obtain compounds 12 (226 mg), 13 (608 mg), and 14 (94 mg). B-2 (9.3g) was subjected to medium pressure column chromatography and gel filtration to obtain compounds 4 (113 mg), 10 (853 mg), and 11 (309 mg). Compound 2 (108 mg) was obtained with the same method.
Conclusion: Cistanche has always been a hot spot for researchers to study medicinal plants. It is effective for infertility improve immunity, tonifying the kidney, improving memory, anti-aging, sexual functions, etc. The study on Cistanche and its extract will continue and get further. With the development of modern science and technology and the deepening of people's understanding of Cistanche, this precious resource will have considerable development prospects. Likewise， the study on the ingredients of Cistanche also is going to be further and hopefully will benefit humans in the future.
