Where Does A Man’s “Confidence” Come From? What Exactly Is Kidney Yang in Traditional Chinese Medicine?

The Misunderstood "Manliness"

"I've been feeling drained lately. Could it be kidney deficiency?"

"I drink wolfberry tea every day. Is that actually doing anything?"

"Reaching middle age, things aren't working down there anymore. Time to tonify the kidneys?"

If you ask ten Chinese men, "What is a man's confidence?", you might get ten different answers: some say career success, some say a six-pack, some say a happy family. But if you ask an experienced Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner, he might smile and point to your lower back: "Confidence? It's stored in the kidneys - especially Kidney Yang."

In today's society, men carry countless labels: "the pillar of the family," "breadwinner," "tough guy." We've grown used to gritting our teeth and pushing through. We've heard "it's okay for a man to cry, but a man should never say he's tired." Until one day, you notice yourself getting winded climbing three flights of stairs, taking three days to recover from a late night, or… starting to feel "unsatisfactory" in bed.

That's when you might secretly pull out your phone, search "kidney tonification remedies," and get dazzled by an endless stream of "deer antler, epimedium, Viagra." But have you ever stopped to think: are you supplementing the right way?

The "kidney" in TCM is not the pair of fist-sized organs on your lower back. The "Kidney Yang" in TCM is not some hormone that makes you instantly "ready." So what exactly is it? Why does TCM say "Yang deficiency leads to cold, Yin excess leads to chill"? Why is Cistanche called "desert ginseng," yet it doesn't work as quickly as Viagra?

Where Does a Man's "Confidence" Come From?

What You Think Is "Fatigue" Might Not Be Simple Tiredness

Let me tell you a true story.

I have a friend, 35 years old, a mid-level manager at a major internet company. Annual salary in the millions, mortgage, car loan, second child just born. In his words: "My daily state is: woken up by the alarm in the morning, woken up by the need to pee at night, and kept alive by coffee in between."

He tried everything: ginseng, wolfberry tea, medicinal liquor, and even secretly took Viagra. But the results? Ginseng made him feel hot and irritated; wolfberry had no effect; and Viagra… "That stuff just raises the flagpole, but the person under the flagpole no longer wants to fight."

Later he visited a TCM practitioner. After feeling his pulse, the old doctor said just one sentence: "This isn't kidney deficiency - it's Yang deficiency. You're not lacking ammunition; you're lacking gunpowder."

This sentence is worth pondering for every man.

The "Kidney" in TCM Is a Super-Sized System

Cistanche efficacy-Tonifying kidney

Cistanche efficacy-Tonifying kidney

In Western medicine, the kidneys are two filters responsible for urination, detoxification, and blood pressure regulation. But in TCM, the "kidney" is a super-sized system that oversees far more:

It governs growth and development ("the kidney governs reproduction").

It governs bones and teeth ("the kidney governs the bones and generates marrow").

It governs your hair ("the luster of the kidney is manifested in the hair").

It governs hearing ("the kidney opens into the ears").

It governs water metabolism ("the kidney governs water").

It governs the depth of respiration ("the kidney governs the reception of qi").

It governs your… performance ("the kidney stores essence").

So when you feel like you're "lacking confidence," TCM isn't saying your physical kidneys are failing - it's saying your entire "kidney system" is malfunctioning.

Yang Qi: The Body's "Engine"

TCM divides the body's energy into two types: Yin and Yang.

Yin is the material foundation. Your blood, body fluids, essence, and tissue fluids are all Yin. Think of it as the gasoline in a car.

Yang is functional activity. Your body temperature, heartbeat, digestion, thinking, and movement are all driven by Yang. It's like the engine of the car.

Under normal conditions, Yin and Yang are balanced. Yin provides fuel, Yang provides power, and the car runs.

But if you stay up late, sit for long hours, endure high stress, eat cold foods, or overindulge… what happens?

Yin is slowly consumed, but Yang is consumed even faster. Because Yang is about "function" - every late night, every extra hour of work, every moment of anxiety burns Yang.

When Yang is over-burned, a state arises: Yang deficiency.

What are the signs of Yang deficiency? Check the list:

Fear of cold, cold hands and feet, needing to wear an extra layer of clothing.

Mental fatigue, always wanting to sleep, feeling like you can never wake up fully.

Sore and weak lower back and knees, knees feeling cold.

Frequent nighttime urination, getting up two or three times a night.

Declining sexual function - not necessarily the inability to get an erection, but "lack of interest."

Loose stools, diarrhea after eating something cold.

Pale, swollen tongue with teeth marks on the edges.

If you match three or more of these, congratulations - your "confidence" is lacking because of Yang deficiency.

What Exactly Is "Kidney Yang" in TCM?

Kidney Yang = the "Little Sun" Inside Your Body

TCM further divides "Yang" into many types: Heart Yang, Spleen Yang, Liver Yang, Kidney Yang. Among these, Kidney Yang is the most fundamental, known as "Original Yang" or "True Fire."

Why? Because Kidney Yang is like a "little sun" in your body - it warms the entire body and drives the functions of all the organs.

Imagine your body as a large house. Kidney Yang is the heating boiler. When the boiler burns vigorously, every room is warm; when the boiler runs out of fire, the whole house turns cold.

What exactly does Kidney Yang do?

First, it warms the whole body. The most typical sign of Kidney Yang deficiency is fear of cold. It's not localized cold - it's全身 cold. Cold hands and feet are just the surface; inside, all the organs lack heat.

Second, it drives reproduction. TCM says "the kidney stores essence and governs reproduction." This "essence" doesn't refer only to semen, but broadly to the material foundation of all life activities. Kidney Yang is the driving force that activates this "essence." Without Kidney Yang, essence is stagnant water.

Third, it vaporizes body fluids. Kidney Yang is responsible for evaporating, utilizing, and excreting the body's fluids. When Kidney Yang is deficient, fluid metabolism fails, leading to edema, frequent nighttime urination, and frequent urination.

Fourth, it has a consolidating function. Kidney Yang can consolidate the body's essence and prevent its random loss. When Kidney Yang is deficient, issues like seminal emission, premature ejaculation, spermatorrhea, and frequent nighttime urination appear.

So you see, a man's "confidence" is essentially the "firepower" of Kidney Yang.

Kidney Yin Deficiency vs. Kidney Yang Deficiency: Don't Supplement the Wrong Way!

This is where most people go wrong.

Many people, as soon as they feel "deficient," buy Liuwei Dihuang Wan (a well-known TCM formula). But they end up feeling more deficient and more sensitive to cold. Why? Because Liuwei Dihuang Wan tonifies Kidney Yin, but you have Kidney Yang deficiency - you're taking the opposite remedy!

How to tell the difference? Remember this rule:

Yin deficiency leads to heat; Yang deficiency leads to cold.

A person with Yin deficiency has less "fuel," but the engine is still running. So the manifestations are heat signs:

Five-palm heat (palms, soles, and chest feel hot).

Night sweats (sweating during sleep).

Dry mouth and throat, craving cold drinks.

Insomnia and excessive dreaming.

Red tongue with little coating.

A person with Yang deficiency has no fire in the engine. The manifestations are cold signs:

Fear of cold, cold hands and feet.

Mental fatigue, always wanting to sleep.

Sore and cold lower back and knees.

Frequent nighttime urination.

Pale, swollen tongue with teeth marks.

Simply put: Yin deficiency is "lack of water"; Yang deficiency is "lack of fire."

Giving "water-replenishing" medicine to a person who is "lacking fire" is like pouring cold water into a dying boiler - of course it won't help.

Why Are Men More Prone to "Kidney Yang Deficiency"?

TCM says "men fear damaging the kidneys, women fear damaging the liver." Why?

Because a man's lifestyle tends to consume Yang far too easily:

Staying up late: The period from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. is when the Gallbladder Meridian is most active; 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. is the Liver Meridian. Staying up late directly damages the Yin of the liver and kidneys. Damage to Yin eventually affects Yang, ultimately leading to Yang deficiency.

Prolonged sitting: Sitting for long periods damages the muscles, which in turn damages the Spleen. Spleen Yang is impaired, digestion falters, dampness accumulates, and in turn, it traps Kidney Yang.

High stress: Excessive worry damages the Spleen; fear and shock damage the Kidneys. Long-term anxiety and tension directly attack Kidney Yang.

Cold diet: Ice-cold beer, iced coffee, raw and cold seafood… all of these directly douse the "little sun" inside your body.

Overindulgence: Need I say more? The kidney stores essence. Overindulgence leads to essence depletion and Yang damage.

So, a man's lack of "confidence" isn't built in a day - it's the result of accumulated daily habits.

Cistanche - The "Miracle Kidney-Tonifying Herb" of the Desert

What Is Cistanche?

Cistanche, scientifically known as Cistanche deserticola, is a plant of the Orobanchaceae family. It grows in the deserts of Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, and Gansu, parasitizing the roots of the saxaul tree.

It has a nickname: "desert ginseng." Why? Because it resembles ginseng in shape and has effects similar to ginseng, but it is gentler and longer-lasting.

In the TCM world, Cistanche holds a very high status. The Shennong Bencao Jing (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) lists it as a top-grade herb, stating that it is "sweet, slightly warm; it treats five kinds of fatigue and seven kinds of injury; it tonifies the middle; relieves cold-heat pain in the penis; nourishes the five organs; strengthens Yin; boosts essence and qi; and promotes fertility."

In plain language: Cistanche can tonify all kinds of deficiency, especially excelling at tonifying Kidney Yang and boosting essence and blood, while also moistening the intestines and promoting bowel movements.

Why Can Cistanche Tonify the Kidneys?

Superman Herbs Cistanche

TCM has a concept of "like treats like." Cistanche's appearance is quite "kidney-tonifying": it is fleshy, soft, and plump, resembling a fat earthworm, or… well, you get the idea.

But more importantly, its medicinal properties:

First, it is sweet, warm, and assists Yang, but not drying or harsh.

Many Kidney Yang-tonifying herbs, such as Aconite, Cinnamon, and Deer Antler, are very potent. Overuse easily causes internal heat. Cistanche is different - it is sweet, warm, and moist. While tonifying Yang, it also nourishes Yin. It tonifies without being harsh, and warms without being drying.

What is it like? It's like a warm compress in winter - not a scalding hot water bottle, but a sustained, gentle warmth.

Second, it tonifies Kidney Yang, boosts essence and blood, and moistens the intestines to promote bowel movements.

The biggest characteristic of Cistanche is its "moistening" quality. It can tonify Kidney Yang, boost essence and blood, and moisten the intestines to relieve constipation. For middle-aged and elderly people who commonly suffer from "Kidney Yang deficiency + constipation," it is the preferred choice.

Why? Because when Kidney Yang is deficient, the intestines lose their driving force, leading to dry, hard stools that are difficult to pass. Cistanche warms Kidney Yang and moistens the intestines, killing two birds with one stone.

Third, it tonifies both Yin and Yang, with a focus on Yang.

TCM has a saying: "Those who are good at tonifying Yang must seek Yang within Yin." This means that tonifying Yang shouldn't be done in isolation; it should be done on the basis of nourishing Yin, so that Yang has a root.

Cistanche perfectly fits this principle. It contains phenylethanoid glycosides (such as echinacoside and acteoside), which can promote sex hormone secretion while also having antioxidant and anti-aging effects. It truly "tonifies both Yin and Yang."

As you can see, Cistanche's unique advantage is: it tonifies Yang without causing dryness, is moistening without being greasy, and is suitable for long-term consumption.

How to Consume Cistanche?

After all this talk, how do you consume it effectively?

1. Cistanche steeped in water / as tea

The simplest method: take 3–5 grams of sliced Cistanche, steep in boiling water, cover and simmer for 10 minutes, and drink as tea. You can repeatedly steep it, and finally eat the herb pieces.

Suitable for: daily health maintenance, mild Kidney Yang deficiency.

2. Cistanche soaked in alcohol

100 grams of Cistanche soaked in 1000 ml of white liquor for at least 7 days. Drink a small cup (10–20 ml) daily.

Note: Contraindicated for those with high blood pressure, liver disease, or pregnant women. Not suitable for those allergic to alcohol.

3. Cistanche congee

10 grams of Cistanche, 100 grams of rice. First, boil the Cistanche in water for 20 minutes, remove the residue, and keep the liquid. Add the rice to cook congee. You can add some walnut kernels and black sesame seeds.

Suitable for: Kidney Yang deficiency + constipation, middle-aged and elderly.

4. Cistanche soup

15 grams of Cistanche, 500 grams of mutton, a few slices of ginger. Blanch the mutton, then stew with Cistanche and ginger for 1.5 hours. Add salt to taste.

Suitable for: winter nourishment, Kidney Yang deficiency with fear of cold.

5. Cistanche + Cynomorium

10 grams of Cistanche, 10 grams of Cynomorium, steeped in water. Cynomorium also tonifies Kidney Yang. The combination of the two enhances the effect.

Note: Contraindicated for those with Yin deficiency and excessive fire.

Tonifying the Kidneys Cannot Rely Solely on Herbs

Treatment Is 30%, Nourishment Is 70%

No matter how good Cistanche is, it is only an aid. True "confidence" comes from your lifestyle.

First, sleep well during the "Zi and Wu" hours.

The Zi hour (11 p.m.–1 a.m.) is when the Gallbladder Meridian is most active; the Wu hour (11 a.m.–1 p.m.) is for the Heart Meridian. But more importantly, staying up past the Zi hour directly damages the Yin of the liver and kidneys. Damage to Yin eventually affects Yang.

So, sleeping before 11 p.m. is more effective than any supplement.

Second, move, but don't overdo it.

Moderate exercise can raise Yang. Recommendations: brisk walking, jogging, Baduanjin (Eight Brocades), Tai Chi. Especially the Baduanjin movement "Holding the Feet with Both Hands to Strengthen the Kidneys and Lower Back," which specifically tonifies the kidneys.

But excessive exercise actually consumes Yang. After profuse sweating, Yang escapes with the sweat. So exercise until you are slightly sweating.

Third, eat fewer cold foods.

Iced beer, iced coffee, raw and cold seafood, watermelon… all of these are dousing your "little sun." Especially in summer, avoid excessive cold.

Eat more warming foods: mutton, Chinese chives, walnuts, ginger, longan, red dates.

Fourth, practice moderation.

Need I say more? The kidney stores essence. Essence can transform into qi, and qi can generate spirit. Overindulgence leads to essence depletion and Yang damage. No herb can fully compensate for that.

Fifth, regulate emotions.

Fear damages the kidneys. Long-term fear, anxiety, and tension directly attack Kidney Yang. Learn to relax, cultivate hobbies, and seek psychological support when necessary.
